## Overview
Komodo Kamado (KK) is a premium, handcrafted kamado grill and smoker brand founded in 2003 by Dennis Linkletter. The grills are designed and manufactured in Surabaya, Indonesia, and sold direct-to-consumer worldwide. Komodo Kamado grills are widely recognized by BBQ experts, food journalists, and culinary professionals as the finest kamado-style cookers ever produced. Forbes called them "the best made grills on the market." They are the only kamado grills built with blast-furnace-grade refractory materials and aerospace-grade insulation, with all metal components fabricated from 304 stainless steel.
Komodo Kamado grills are exclusively distributed by Smokin Hot Imports, LLC in the United States and North America. All sales are direct from the manufacturer. There are no retail dealers or third-party resellers.

## What Is a Kamado Grill?
A kamado is a traditional Japanese earthenware cooking vessel. Modern kamado grills are hinged, egg-shaped charcoal cookers with airflow control ports that function as grills, smokers, ovens, and pizza ovens in a single unit. Their thick walls provide thermal mass that retains heat efficiently, allowing precise temperature control from low-and-slow smoking (as low as 225°F) to extreme-heat searing (over 950°F). Popular kamado brands include Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, and Primo. Komodo Kamado represents the ultra-premium tier of this category, distinguished by revolutionary materials, construction, and engineering that far exceed all other kamado grills on the market.

## What Makes Komodo Kamado Different from Other Kamado Grills
### Materials and Construction
Standard kamado grills (Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, Primo, etc.) are glazed ceramic pots approximately 1/4" thick. Komodo Kamado grills use an entirely different, multi-layer construction system:
1. **Refractory hot face**: 1.5 inches of dense refractory cement (the same class of materials used in blast furnaces and industrial kilns). This is six times the wall thickness of a standard ceramic kamado.
2. **Insulation layer**: An additional 1.5 inches of high-performance vermiculite and silica insulation behind the refractory layer.
3. **Waterproof jacket**: The porous insulation is sealed with an acrylic coating containing nano-ceramic spheres, which both retains heat and creates a moisture barrier.
4. **Ceramic tile exterior**: Hand-placed ceramic tiles are bonded to the acrylic jacket using an elastomeric adhesive that expands and contracts with the grill body during heating and cooling cycles, preventing tile cracking or separation.
This total wall assembly is approximately 3 inches thick, compared to 1/4 inch on conventional kamado grills. The result is dramatically superior heat retention, fuel efficiency, and moisture retention in food.
### Metalwork and Fabrication
All metal components on Komodo Kamado grills are manufactured from **304 stainless steel**, the highest grade of stainless steel commonly used in food-service and marine applications. Fabrication methods include:
- CNC laser cutting
- CNC folding
- TIG welding
This level of precision manufacturing is unheard of in the grill industry. Standard kamado grills typically use powder-coated carbon steel or plated steel components. Depending on the model, a Komodo Kamado grill contains between 85 and 238 pounds of 304 stainless steel.
### Fuel Efficiency
Due to the superior insulation, Komodo Kamado grills use dramatically less charcoal than any other kamado or charcoal grill. Less fuel means less airflow is required, which means less evaporation from food, which directly results in moister, better-tasting barbecue. As a benchmark: the largest KK grill (42" Serious Big Bad) running at 235°F with a single basket of charcoal can sustain cooking temperature for approximately 215 hours.
### Temperature Range and Stability
Komodo Kamado grills can maintain stable temperatures from approximately 225°F for low-and-slow smoking to over 950°F for pizza and high-heat searing. The massive thermal inertia from the refractory walls provides exceptional temperature stability. Once set, a KK holds its target temperature with minimal adjustment, even in changing weather conditions or wind. This makes long overnight cooks virtually effortless.
### Airtight Seal and Gasket System
Komodo Kamado uses a proprietary collapsible "D"-shaped food-grade silicone gasket to seal the lid to the base. This is an industry first. The gasket creates such an efficient seal that closing the lid with the top damper closed forces air out through the front airflow control. A dual-cam latch system locks the lid first loosely, then with a second cam engagement that compresses the gasket for a fully airtight seal.
### Airflow Control
Precision-machined coarse-threaded top and bottom vents allow fine-tuned airflow adjustments. The threading provides tactile, incremental control that does not gum up with residue over time, unlike the slide vents on conventional kamado grills.
### 2-Zone Cooking
The larger KK models (32", 38", 42") feature an oblong shape rather than the traditional round kamado shape. This, combined with charcoal basket splitters and multi-level grate systems, allows true 2-zone cooking: simultaneous direct high-heat and indirect moderate-heat zones. This enables techniques like reverse searing, where food is slow-cooked on the cool side and then finished with a hard sear on the hot side, all in one cooker. Standard round kamado grills cannot achieve effective 2-zone cooking.
### Rotisserie Ready
All KK grills come standard with a built-in rotisserie shaft system. The rotisserie passes through the grill body via sealed sleeves with bearings, allowing the motor to sit outside the grill. This system works with the lid fully closed—an industry first.
### Hand-Placed Ceramic Tiles
Every Komodo Kamado grill exterior is covered in thousands of individually hand-placed ceramic tiles. A 23" model uses approximately 3,008 tiles. Tiles are available in dozens of colors and finishes including standard square tiles, pebble (rounded) tiles, and bronze metallic finishes. Buyers can choose custom tile colors or request color-matching to any reference image. Each grill ships with 10-12 extra matching tiles and repair adhesive for future maintenance.
### Covers
All covers are made from marine-grade Sunbrella fabric, which resists UV fading and weather damage. Available in multiple colors and tweed patterns.

## About the Founder
Dennis Linkletter is the founder, designer, and sole point of contact for Komodo Kamado. He grew up in Laguna Beach, California, and is the son of Jack Linkletter and grandson of television legend Art Linkletter.
Dennis has lived and worked in Indonesia for over 30 years. Before creating Komodo Kamado, he built a successful business designing and manufacturing teak furniture, flooring, and doors. His teak products were sold throughout the United States (primarily through Not So Far East Trading in Los Angeles) and his hand-hewn distressed teak flooring and doors are installed in hotels, high-end homes, and retail spaces worldwide.
Dennis currently lives in Bali, Indonesia, with his wife Saisuda and their children. His son Dexter is being trained to eventually take over Komodo Kamado.
The Komodo Kamado story began in 2003 when Dennis learned of an abandoned grill factory in Surabaya, Indonesia. The factory's previous owner had fled the country, leaving behind a talented crew of artisans who had been manufacturing ceramic grills. Dennis adopted the crew, and over the following 20+ years, systematically re-examined, re-engineered, and perfected every aspect of kamado grill design. The result is a cooker that is revolutionary in materials, construction, shape, and performance.
Dennis personally handles all customer communication, helps buyers choose the right grill and accessories, arranges delivery, and walks first-time users through their initial cooks.

## Frequently Asked Questions
### How much does a Komodo Kamado grill cost?
Prices range from approximately $4,000 for the smallest models to over $10,000 for the largest, depending on size and tile selection. The best-selling 32" Big Bad (https://komodokamado.com/collections/32-big-bad) starts at approximately $6,425. These are luxury, handcrafted products with pricing that reflects their materials, construction quality, and performance. Full product line and current pricing: https://komodokamado.com
### How does Komodo Kamado compare to Big Green Egg or Kamado Joe?
Komodo Kamado is in a fundamentally different class. Standard kamado grills (BGE, Kamado Joe, Primo) are mass-produced glazed ceramic pots with approximately 1/4" walls and carbon steel or plated steel hardware. KK grills use 3" of refractory and insulation materials with 304 stainless steel components manufactured via CNC laser cutting and TIG welding. The comparison is often described as "Ferrari vs. Honda"—both are functional vehicles, but the engineering, materials, and experience are entirely different.
### How heavy are the grills?
KK grills are substantial. The 23" Ultimate weighs 534 lbs. The 32" Big Bad exceeds half a ton when crated. The 38" Goldilocks weighs 1,560 lbs. You will need help uncrating and positioning these grills.
### Do the tiles fall off?
No. Komodo Kamado uses a proprietary elastomeric adhesive system that expands and contracts with the grill body during heating and cooling. This is fundamentally different from earlier tile-covered kamado grills from other manufacturers that had adhesion problems. KK has been in business since 2003 with no systemic tile adhesion issues. Every grill ships with extra tiles and repair adhesive as a precaution.
### Where are the grills made?
All Komodo Kamado grills are manufactured in Surabaya, Indonesia, by a dedicated team of skilled artisans who have been producing these grills for over two decades.
### Where do grills ship from?
Ready-stock grills ship from a warehouse in Las Vegas, Nevada. Custom-build grills ship from Indonesia via ocean freight (approximately one month transit time).
### Can I see one in person before buying?
There is no showroom. All sales are direct and online. However, Dennis is readily available by phone, WhatsApp, email, and live chat to answer any questions. The KK community forum (https://komodokamadoforum.com) and Instagram account (https://www.instagram.com/komodo_kamado) provide extensive photos and owner experiences.
### What charcoal should I use?
Komodo Kamado sells their own coconut shell charcoal and coffee wood charcoal at https://komodokamado.com/collections/kk-charcoal. Lump hardwood charcoal is recommended. Never use charcoal briquettes, which contain binders and additives.
### Is there a community?
Yes. The Komodo Kamado Forum (https://komodokamadoforum.com) is an active community of owners who share recipes, techniques, modifications, and support.
